Our Colombia Decaf is balanced and flavorful with the classic aroma that Colombian coffees are known for. High-grown and hand-sorted, these fine Arabica beans offer a smooth, medium-bodied cup with notes of dark chocolate that linger into a sweetly balanced finish. To ensure that our 100% Excelso beans are decaffeinated in an environmentally appropriate manner, we choose a chemical-free, mountain-water process that provides a caffeine-free, richly satisfying cup.
"Excelso" is a grading term for exportable coffee from Colombia, unrelated to variety or cupping profile. Excelso coffee beans are large, but slightly smaller than Supremo beans. Excelso coffee beans are a screen size of 15-16, whereas Supremo beans are sized on screen 17. Despite a difference in bean size, the Excelso beans offer the same coffee quality and flavor as their Supremo-sized cousins. In fact, it is entirely possible that Supremo and Excelso coffee beans prepared for shipment had been harvested from the very same coffee tree.
To heighten the flavor and body of this Colombia Decaf, the French press is an excellent brewing choice since it brews without a paper filter. Paper filters trap much of a coffee's flavorful oils. A French press, on the other hand, relies on a metal screen to trap spent coffee grounds while still allowing the oils to pass through. A number of our decaf-drinking customers have discovered that a paperless brewing method produces a decidedly improved cup of coffee.
