Coffee Specs
Grown in the coffee district of San Juan del Rio Coco, this outstanding Nicaraguan features a harvest of sweet citrus, ripe pear, and honey flavors. Balanced and medium-bodied with subdued acidity, floral aroma, and a chocolate-toned finish, the Nicaragua Rio Coco is SHG (Strictly High Grown) and delivers a stylish cup. What's more, ninety-five percent of Nicaragua’s coffee is considered “shade grown,” thus reducing the need for pesticides. Native trees and farmers’ management practices sustain an ecosystem that promotes biodiversity, as well as soil and water conservation.

        Origin Notes
Shade-grown arabica coffee

Coffee farming in Nicaragua dates back to the mid-1800s, and coffee remained the country's principal export crop for over a century. The largest but most sparsely populated nation in Central America, Nicaragua is known as The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes. Its topography is varied, resulting in a range of climate zones. Nicaragua is also the second poorest country in the hemisphere, with Haiti being the poorest. Since this Nicaraguan coffee is from the Rio Coco Co-op, it is certified "Fair Trade" to assure the coffee farmer a living wage and fair price. Its organic certification guarantees that the Nicaragua San Juan del Rio Coco is grown and prepared in an environmentally prudent manner.

Nicaraguan coffee went virtually unnoticed during America's burgeoning specialty coffee market of the '80s and '90s due to trade embargoes the United States had leveled against the Sandinista government. Today the country is staging a comeback in specialty coffee with the creation of small farms, centralized mills, and new opportunities for market exposure that include the Cup of Excellence competition. Poised to regain their standing as world-class coffee growers, Nicaraguan farmers recently earned the highest price ever awarded a coffee at a Latin American coffee auction.

        Recommended Brewing   vacuum pot
The drip method is a perfect match for the Rio Coco's delicious flavor, while the vacuum (or siphon) pot will accentuate both flavor and acidity. To achieve a fuller body, the French press is the best choice. Adaptable to nearly any type of brewing method, the Rio Coco could also be brewed as a single-origin espresso due to its moderate acidity and sweet flavor.
